producing reliable electricity on a large scale
The Power Generation Sector of the Group comprises of a 30 MW heavy fuel oil (HFO) power plant located in Jaffna, Sri Lanka. The plant which has an installed capacity of 36 MW was built to provide electricity to the Northern Region in the absence of National Grid connectivity.
The plant currently supplies electricity to the National Grid which is connected across the Island, and has a power purchase agreement (PPA) till the end of year 2023.
With a view of being more sustainable and helping the Sri Lankan Government achieve its goal of producing 20% of the country’s energy requirement using renewable sources by 2020, Walkers CML PLC intends to enter the renewable energy sector.
The Group is currently in the advanced stages of a feasibility study and is evaluating several options in wind and solar power.
